Board of Directors Meeting Minutes

The meeting convened at 6:02 PM on February 3, 2016, at the Waikoloa Village Association conference room.

Secretary in attendance and recorder of minutes: Kyle Combes

Board members present: Ted Cassinelli, Bob Risley, Mike Bernstone, Kyle Combes, Jim Albone, Daniel Legler, Lisa Legler, Harold van Doren, Guy Davis

Board members absent: None

Head coach Daniel Legler present.

Members in attendance: Lyle Cabacungan

President Ted Cassinelli opened the meeting.

Previous meeting minutes

  • Mike Bernstone motions to approval minutes. Unanimous approval.

Treasurer’s Report

  • Kyle motions to accept report. Unanimous approval.

Moku Report (Lisa)

  • No meeting

  • HCRA voting results (attached)

Equipment Report (Guy)

  • Finished iakos for J4

  • Salvaged one of the Pure steering blades (not one of the missing ones)

  • Missing:

    • 2 Pure steering blades

    • approx. 6-10 regular blades

    • Should inventory blades, keep track of sizes – Bob and Kyle will inventory

    • Ted will send out email about missing paddles

  • Ho‘omaluo leaking again

    • Leak in area marked when sent to Bill for repairs before

    • Jim will try to repair crack this weekend

  • J4

    • Tiger repaired inside, now working on hull

    • Daniel thinks we should only spend $3,000 (vs $5k), skip full sand-down & repaint

    • Mike Bernstone makes motion to amend previous repair motion to a cap of $3,000, revisit total repaint at the end of the season. Six in favor, two opposed. Motion passed.

Fundraising (Jim)

  • Worried about (Ocean Sports) fundraiser this Sunday due to winds.

  • Interest for another event for 100 people.

  • Lavaman (Harold)

    • Need more people for setup

      • 16 for water patrol on Sunday

      • 10 for tear-down on Sunday afternoon

      • Will revisit recruiting volunteers at next meeting

  • Got $500 for Oyster Bar

  • Went over letter Harold is drafting to send to local businesses to generate more events

Bylaws (Ted)

  • Committee should be finishing revisions within the next few days

  • Suggests we hold special meeting dedicated to working on bylaws

New Paddling Time (Ted)

  • 6:30 AM start on Tuesdays and Thursdays, back by 7:45

  • 8 AM canoes should be back by 10 AM (for safety purposes, to tell when someone’s missing)

Kama O Ka Lani Repairs (Daniel)

  • (include pictures)

  • Had to cut canoe in half lengthwise to straighten

  • Removed bulge in front

  • Needs four 15’x6” koa planks to repair gunnel

  • Found out a lot on the history

    • Correct, full name: Kama O Ka Lani O Ke Kai

    • Will have more history later; will give to secretary

  • Timeline being pushed – might not be ready by first regatta; trying his best

Kama O Ka Lani Fundraiser

  • Daniel secured $5,000 grant from HCRA

  • John Ciambrone & team having a meeting tomorrow

  • Daniel will approach Atherton as well

Membership Drive (Lisa)

  • Steak fry needs lots of permits, booked through February anyway

  • Will hold old-style paddling drive February 20 (Saturday) & 28 (Sunday) from 10 AM to noon

    • Ted will check dates with Waikoloa Land Company

Policy for Non-Member Paddlers (Ted)

  • Lots of drop-in beachgoers

  • Kyle will add link on website to direct non-resident visitors to Ocean Sports

  • Ted will write up policy/guidelines and email out for review

Steering Clinic (Lisa)

  • Steering clinic set for Saturday, February 27, from 8 AM to 10 AM

Next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at 6:00 PM at Waikoloa Village Association conference room.
